Later Acheulian Marking Motifs II - Other Sites / g)asselt

Intentional lattice patterns engraved on stone, Asselt, NL, >400,000 BP (Van Es and Benekendorff 2001). "Excavated or dredged material from Panheel, near Roermond, Lumburg, Netherlands; dumped at location of Asselt and spreadto secure banks of the Lateraal Kanaal all the way to Beegden. From Rivers Rhine and Maas sedimentations from 25m below the surfaces and dredged from glacial moraine of Elster and late Cromer. Dating via artifacts (tools) in context with Very Old Acheulian 350,000-450,000 years by Rijks Geologische Dienst, geologist J. Broetjes" (personal communication Jan van Es).

Comment: These pieces need further examination and validation as intentional engravings. As they are each from secondary deposits no evidence for or against curation of the objects is available. As I am unaware of any accidental, natural way in which these objects could have been imprinted as they are, they may be accepted as supporting evidence for the lattice motif during the Later Acheulian, until a convincing argument is given to reject them.
