HK19A and 19B, Har Karkom, Israel, c. 128,000 to 50,000 BP; o) hk19b #5 preengwaterbird

From the white stone circle, in hutfloor, HK19B, artifact #5. Placed on heavy weight paper background for photo. Size: 8 cm long. 5 cm wide, 3 cm high maximal distances.

Tenative interpretation (James Harrod): Intentionally engraved artifact; zoomorphic; waterbird preening itself with head turned backward over its body. Many examples of this stereotypical figuration occur at Pampau, Germany, Acheulian level, and other sites across Northwest Europe and elsewhere. The piece is flaked all over, with only a bit of cortex remaining on the bottom (not visible in this photo).
