Early Acheulian & Developed OldowanB / d)oldupbdIIawlsfig25

Awls. Upper Bed II, Olduvai Gorge (c. 1.15 - 1.3 MYA). Position of trimming on projections is intentional, and Wynn observes, reflects a conscious distinction between rounded and pointy shapes. Awls first appear in Developed Oldowan A and are most frequent in Developed Oldowan B dated to the same period as the Early Acheulian. I take this to be a 'one-tiered', 4-faceted set of thematic shapes, in this case a mirror pair of convex shapes on either side and an opposition between the pointy shape(s) at the top and a rounded shape at the bottom.
