Comment: As at Olorgesailie, the handaxe and cleaver are predominate bifaces at Olduvai Gorge Middle Acheulian sites. Bed IV sites are dated 600-800,000 BP.

Bed IV WK Upper Channel: "Cleavers. The specimen at the top left is of quartzite and that at the bottom right of phonolite, the remainder are of basalt or trachyandesite."
